Blue Alley Cats are a Bay Area based blues-rock band. We first came together in March of 2012 to focus our diverse and well-heeled talents on bringing back the heavy blues-rock sound that was such a major force in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The sounds of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, John Mayall, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Savoy Brown and many, many others coming out of England were the sounds that we cut our teeth on, growing up in that turbulent time. Through these British imports we were introduced to our own American blues. The electrified and exploding punch of British blues grabbed our attention and taught us about the real blues masters – Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and the whole Chicago blues scene as well as the early delta blues and the classic songs of Robert Johnson, Son House and so many others.
We cut our first demos within a month of our conception and in a matter of a couple of weeks our as-of-then unfinished tracks were picked up by internet radio station FatCat Radio. Our versions of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put A Spell On You’, Don Nix’s ‘Going Down’ and John Lennon’s ‘Yer Blues’ could be heard daily on FatCat. Our renditions along with many live recordings can be heard on our Bandcamp and ReverbNation sites. We’re currently as of this writing concluding recording of our first album, due out very soon.
We’ve played at various venues in the Bay Area – in Rohnert Park, Emeryville, Oakland, Fremont, Hayward, San Francisco and most recently Crockett – to small but enthusiastic audiences. Videos of our live shows can be found on You Tube directly and from links on our Facebook page. Google ‘Blue Alley Cats’ for more complete information.
Blue Alley Cats are Tim Vargas (vocals and harmonica), Mike Labins (guitar), Ed Lundell (bass) and Joey Molina (drums) with occasional help from Otoe Mori (alto sax). Former drummer Larry Luthi has also contributed greatly and will also be appearing on the forthcoming album. We are all seasoned musicians and we have played in numerous bands over the years in the Bay Area and beyond.
